From romantic connections beyond 60 to why sitting is bad for you, the National Ageing Research Institute’s major one-day seminar held today will share the latest research on keeping active and healthy in later life.

NARI director Professor David Ames said the seminar offered an important opportunity for the latest research and thinking on ageing to be shared among those working in the sector.

“NARI has been at the forefront of research into falls prevention as well as learning more about exercise in people with dementia,” he said.

“Falls and dementia can be prevented and to some degree dementia may be delayed if people use their brains and bodies more. The message is simple: use it or lose it.”

He said an increasing focus of NARI’s research was also turning to the physical and mental health of carers in Australia, a largely under-researched group in Australia.

Professor Henry Brodaty from the University of New South Wales will speak on the prevention of dementia, in addition to launching a new book with Professor David Ames on Designing and Delivering Dementia Services.

Dr Sue Malta, a Research Fellow with NARI will talk on romantic love and why it does not stop at 60 and Associate Professor Kay Cox from the University of Western Australia will address the audience on the health benefits of keeping active.

Professor Ames said evidence-based research is providing some important insights into how we can live healthier for longer.

“By bringing research to life, we can learn more about how people age and what can be done to slow down the many effects that often come with ageing,” he said.

The Victorian Minister for Health, David Davis, will officially open the seminar at 9.15am today at Russell Kennedy, Level 12, 469 La Trobe Street, Melbourne.
