New Shadow Minister

Queensland MP Margaret May becomes Coalition spokesperson on Ageing.

The federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has appointed Queensland MP Margaret May (pictured) Shadow Minister for Ageing.

In a statement, Mrs may said she planned to promote positive perceptions of ageing in  her new role.

“Social policy for our ageing population is extremely important,” she said

“We must maintain the right policies to support older Australians whether they be in their home or in an aged care facility.”

Mrs May has been the member for McPherson since 1998 and was a member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Ageing between March 2002 and August 2004. This is her first position on the front bench.

She listed adequate funding for aged care along with well-being, health and quality of life for older Australians among her top priorities.

The new Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing is Joe Hockey and former Minister for Ageing Bronwyn Bishop has been given the Veterans’ Affairs Portfolio.

The former Minister for Ageing, Christopher Pyne, is now the spokesperson for Justice and Border Protection and the Assisting Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship.
