Local authorities must be encouraged to put seniors first in the design and building of housing, but also when allocating sites for accommodation, said David Hughes, a senior partner with Pozzoni Architecture in the UK.

“We’re finding time and again that we’re beaten on price of land, and we’re not able to pick the sites we want,” Mr Hughes told the NEWSROOM at the HammondCare International Dementia Conference on Thursday.

When it came design of aged care, he said the most important issue was how the building could reduce anxiety for residents, particularly those living with dementia.

The need for quiet environments, and lots of natural light, were key design issues, he said.
